What it is
A hosted online store platform: servers, infrastructure security and updates are handled by Shopify.
Type and licence
Commercial subscription service (SaaS), closed source; extra features through apps, many with a separate subscription.
Good for
Stores that want to launch quickly, with a standard sales flow, and no technical team for servers and updates.
Less suited to
Highly customised flows, local integrations with no available app, or companies that want full control over the code and hosting.
Alternatives
WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Magento (Adobe Commerce), custom solutions on modern frameworks.
How we use it
We set up and adapt Shopify stores: theme, catalogue structure, integrations with payments, couriers and invoicing, all tested before launch.

Shopify is a hosted online store platform: you pay a subscription and Shopify takes care of servers, infrastructure security and updates. For a company in Romania, a Shopify store means a fast launch and simple day-to-day management, provided the local integrations you need (payments, couriers, invoicing) exist for the platform.

Shopify is used by stores of every size, from new businesses to large brands. In Romania, the practical question is not whether Shopify works, but how well it connects to the local ecosystem and what trade-offs you accept in exchange for simplicity. That is what we explain below.

In short

Shopify is a good fit when you want to start selling quickly, without the technical burden of servers and updates. The real cost includes the subscription, the apps and payment fees. Before you choose, check the specific integrations for your payment processor, your courier and your invoicing software.

What Shopify is and how it works

Shopify is SaaS (“software as a service”): you do not install anything on your own server; you create an account and manage the store from an online dashboard. The platform includes the product catalogue, cart, checkout, order and customer management, basic reports and a mobile app for running the store.

The design comes from a theme, free or paid, which can be customised in the visual editor or, more deeply, by a developer using the Liquid templating language. Features the platform does not offer out of the box are added through apps from the Shopify App Store or through custom development on the platform's API, the interface other systems use to talk to the store automatically.

The advantages of a Shopify store

  • Fast launch: no servers to configure, and the core features are ready to use.
  • No worrying about updates or infrastructure security, which are Shopify's responsibility.
  • Stability during traffic peaks, for example in sales campaigns, without moving the store to another server.
  • Simple management for teams with no technical person: products, orders, discounts, customers.
  • A large ecosystem of themes and apps for marketing, reviews, email, subscriptions and more.
  • Support for multiple languages and currencies, useful if you also sell outside Romania.

The main advantage is not any single feature, but the fact that your team can focus on products, content and customers rather than servers. For a new store or a company without a technical department, that can mean a faster launch and fewer surprises afterwards. Discipline matters, though: every app you install adds a monthly cost, data access permissions and code loaded into your pages, so keep only what you actually use.

Shopify in Romania: payments, couriers and invoicing

This is usually where it is decided whether Shopify is the right fit. A store in Romania needs the payment, the invoice and the AWB (the courier's waybill) to work together, with no manual work on every order.

  • Card payments: check on Shopify's website which payment options are available to a company registered in Romania and which third-party processors (for example Stripe or local processors) have an integration. When you use a third-party processor, some plans may also charge additional Shopify fees; check the official pricing page.
  • Cash on delivery: Shopify supports manual payment methods; what matters is that the payment is reflected correctly in the order, the invoice and the courier's report.
  • Couriers: for companies such as FAN Courier, Sameday or Cargus there may be Shopify apps, either official or built by third parties. For your courier, check what the app does (AWB, tracking, cash on delivery, returns) and who maintains it.
  • Invoicing: invoicing software such as SmartBill or Oblio can connect to Shopify through apps or through the API. Submission to e-Factura (Romania's national e-invoicing system), where it applies, is usually done through the invoicing software; the rules can change, so check the current information on the website of ANAF (the Romanian tax authority) and with your accountant.

Watch out

Do not decide based on a list of apps. Ask for, or run, an end-to-end test: an order paid by card, a cash-on-delivery order, an invoice issued, an AWB generated, an email to the customer, a cancellation and a return. This article is for information only and does not replace your accountant's advice on tax obligations.

How much does a Shopify store cost? What drives the cost

We do not give figures, because Shopify's plans and fees change; always check the official pricing page. In general, the cost structure looks like this:

  • The platform subscription, monthly or yearly, depending on the plan you choose.
  • Apps: many have their own subscription, and together they can cost more than the base plan.
  • The theme: free, paid or custom-built.
  • The payment processor's fees and, in some cases, Shopify's transaction fees.
  • Setup, integrations and content: catalogue, photos, copy, migrating data from an existing store.

Practical tip

Before launch, list the apps you need and check each one's subscription. It is easier to choose one app that does three things now than to pay later for three separate apps that overlap.

Shopify's limits, honestly

  • You have no access to the platform's code or the server: you customise only what Shopify allows.
  • Some areas, such as the checkout page, can be customised only within the limits of your plan.
  • Dependence on apps: an important feature may rely on a third-party app, which can change its price or disappear.
  • Moving to another platform means rebuilding the theme and integrations; the core data can be exported, but not everything you have built.
  • There may be fewer local integrations than in the WordPress ecosystem, and some may require development on the API.
  • Some technical SEO aspects, such as the structure of certain URLs, follow the platform's rules and cannot be fully changed.

Shopify and SEO: what you control and what you don't

A Shopify store can be well optimised for Google: you can edit page titles and descriptions, image alt text and product URLs, and the platform generates the sitemap automatically. Shopify also has a built-in blog, simpler than WordPress but sufficient for guides and news.

What you do not fully control are some structural elements imposed by the platform, such as the prefixes in product and collection URLs. They are not usually a problem, but they matter when migrating from an existing store: every old URL must be redirected to the new one. Here too, quality content and page speed weigh more than the platform.

How to launch a Shopify store in Romania: the steps

  1. Describe the full order flow: what you sell, how the customer pays, who issues the invoice, which courier delivers, how you handle returns.
  2. Before subscribing, check the payment options available to your company and the apps for your courier and invoicing.
  3. Choose the plan based on the features you need now, not the ones you “might” use.
  4. Define the catalogue structure: collections, variants, tags and filters.
  5. Choose the theme and adapt it: the home page, product page and cart matter most.
  6. Set up taxes, shipping zones, currency and the Romanian language for all customer-facing text, including emails.
  7. Prepare the legal pages required by consumer protection rules (terms, returns policy, privacy), with help from a specialist.
  8. Place end-to-end test orders, including cash on delivery, cancellation and return, before opening the store.

An easy detail to miss: translating the automatic emails and the checkout page into Romanian. A customer who sees text mixed with English at payment has one more reason to abandon the cart.

When Shopify is the right choice and when it isn't

Shopify suits a store with a standard sales flow that wants to launch quickly, has no technical team and prefers a predictable recurring cost to maintaining its own server. It also suits brands that sell in several countries and want stability during traffic peaks.

It is not the best choice when you need deep integrations with an ERP or stock management system with no available app, complex B2B pricing rules, full control over data and hosting, or when you already have a WordPress site with a lot of content that is valuable for SEO. In those cases, WooCommerce or a custom solution may be a better fit.

At WEB-AZ we work with Shopify when simplicity and speed of launch matter more than full control. We check the payment, courier and invoicing integrations from the start, then set up the theme, catalogue and order flow, so you know exactly what the store does and where its limits are before launch.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Can Shopify be used in Romania?

Yes, a company in Romania can set up a Shopify store and sell in Romania and other countries. What matters is checking early which payment options are available to your company and which integrations exist for the courier and invoicing software you use.

  2. How much does a Shopify store cost?

The cost includes the platform subscription, the apps you add, possibly a paid theme, payment fees and the initial setup. Plans and fees change, so check Shopify's official pricing page. Budget for the first year with all the apps you need, not just the base subscription.

  3. Does Shopify integrate with SmartBill, Oblio or other invoicing software?

Several Romanian invoicing programs have apps or API integrations for Shopify, but availability and features vary. Check whether the integration issues the invoice automatically for each order, handles cancellations and returns, and who maintains it.

  4. Can I offer cash on delivery on Shopify?

Yes, Shopify supports manual payment methods, including payment on delivery. Make sure cash on delivery links correctly to the courier, the invoice and your payment records, so you do not have to check every order by hand.

  5. Can I move my store from Shopify to another platform?

Products, customers and orders can be exported, but the theme, apps and integrations have to be rebuilt on the new platform. Also plan redirects for the old URLs, so you do not lose the visibility you have built up in Google.
